Alcohol Ink Bird Paintings and Landscapes by Kim Anderson
Asheville artist Kim Anderson has been drawing since she was just 3 years old, always with a pencil in her hand. As a self-taught artist, Kim has a natural talent for illustrations, which has inspired her to explore various art forms such as alcohol ink painting.
For example, Kim has worked many different mediums, from Sgrafitto on board to block prints, and most recently, alcohol ink on tile.
Alcohol ink painting is a fairly new modern art form, yet it has quickly gained popularity for its vibrant colors and unique fluid movements.
This this style of painting is created by combining ink (dye-based pigments) with isopropyl alcohol. This allows artists like Kim to create vivid, yet often whimsical colored pieces that are difficult to achieve with other materials.
Kim’s alcohol ink paintings are known for their bold colors, and exquisitely detailed illustrations of her trademark bird portraits and miniature landscapes.
The origins of alcohol ink painting can be traced back to the 1980s and 1990s, a time when alcohol-based markers became popular among graphic designers, illustrators, and crafters.
These markers, known for their fast-drying and vibrant qualities, laid the groundwork for the development of alcohol ink as a standalone medium.
Then the late 1990s and early 2000s, alcohol inks were introduced as liquid dyes specifically designed for non-porous surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramics and tile.
Artists like Kim began experimenting with these inks, discovering their potential for creating boldly colored art.
