Here’s What to do in Downtown Asheville

In Between the Southern Conference Basketball Games

If you are coming to the Southern Conference Basketball Championships, eventually you will have a break in the games of your favorite team.

There’s no better time to walk one block over to the Grove Arcade and come inside out of the wind to watch over live art demos here the Mountain Made art gallery.  We will have demos by illustrator Kimberly Powell Anderson, Master Ceramic Artist Jean Saake and Scientific Glassblower Jason Probstein this March 2013.

Plus we will have live music by 2 of our favorite musical groups: Garner Hathaway and South Forty.  Click below to watch some more short videos we have of our artists’ works in this post.

Friday – 11AM – 4PM

Jason Probstein, a well known glass artist, will be showcasing his skills in glassblowing from 11AM to 4PM Friday the 8th and Saturday the 9th  2013. You can watch Jason start with a simple Pyrex tube and within minutes using the latest in scientific glassblowing techniques, create a strikingly glass goblet or wall decor piece or ornament.

Saturday – 12PM – 3PM

One of Asheville’s master ceramic artist, Jean Saake, along with her husband Carl will also be here Saturday to demonstration her wonderful technique of building fanciful birds and fruit such as apples and pears from clay.

Jean painstakingly molds, rolls and pinch crafts each and every one of her ceramic pieces by hand while Carl hand paints and glazes them.

And don’t forget Jason will also be inside the gallery continuing his glassblowing demonstrations.

Sunday – 12PM – 3PM

We will have illustrator Kimberly Powell Anderson with us Sunday. Kim is one of the few artists in the in Western North Carolina area who works in the ancient art of “Sgraffito”.

Sgraffito (or scratchboard)  is a centuries old art form that was used to decorate everything from stone walls, to ceramic vessels – it is done by the artist carefully “cutting away parts of a surface layer (like as of plaster or clay) to expose a different colored background underneath.
