Summer of Glass 2018 - Mountain Made Art Gallery

What is the Summer of Glass?

The Summer of Glass 2018 is a community/region wide celebration of glass and the rich history of glassmaking in Asheville and around the surrounding Western North Carolina counties.

Summer of Glass 2018 is a wonderful consortium of glass artists, individual collectors, galleries (like Mountain Made), other local businesses, museums and nonprofits, who have all come together in a collaborative effort to highlight contemporary glass art in our community as well as the history of glass-making in Western North Carolina.

In September of 2017 the Biltmore Estate announced its plans to host an exhibition of Dale Chihuly’s glass sculptures on the estate grounds from May 17–October 7, 2018.

By November 2017, the NC Glass Center gathered together business and cultural leaders as well as individual glass artists in a round table discussion to plan out and create a six-month long celebration of glass art from the area.

This partnership has lead to a series of special exhibits and events from May–October 2018, which highlight the WNC glass art experience and the history (and global impact) WNC glass:

Glass lampwork artist Linda Bellino is mostly self-taught even though her introduction to the arts began in her family. Since then, she has become well known for imaginative lampwork beads that are featured in her eye-catching line of bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. The line of glass beadwork, fiber art frogs and lizards she started in the 80’s has naturally expanded since then and continues to bring joy and smiles to her customers.

Terri Sigler started her glassblowing career in 2006, when her husband gifted her with a glassblowing class. Terri thought he was crazy but since the class included a week-long stay at great hotel and a non-refundable class certificate, she went along with it.

But after her glassblowing “bootcamp” she was hooked and ended up spending over three years building her own glassblowing studio – from scratch – from designing it, to welding, to wiring it. But the vividly colored yet functional glass pieces she creates are well worth the effort!

Fused glass Sharon McCollum first started making Jewelry in 2006 as a hobby and it soon became a growing passion. However she never seemed to have enough time to do what she loved due to caring for her beloved family members.

However in the quiet hours, in her spare time, Sharon went back to handcrafting her jewelry. Her designs are created using the earth’s natural gems, lead crystals, wire work and fused glass that incorporates Dichoric or Iridized glass.

Stained Glass Artist Kathy Goldstein, was born in London, England and raised in New York City, Kathy found her passion and started her stained glass career in 1981 and never looked back.

Kathy moved to Hendersonville NC in 1990 and found inspiration in nature and specialized in 3-D birds and flowers. Her real love is to produce stained glass spider webs which have been her most popular work. Kathy’s work is best enjoyed when catching the sunlight through a window!

As far back as she can remember, glass artist Alberta Blazina has been intrigued with glass as an art form. So in 1983 after her children had left the nest, she took a course in stained glass at the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts.

From that single course onward, she has studied various other techniques such as glass fusing and using a glory hole furnace. Her lighthearted bird and butterfly designs along with her wonderful wind chines showcase her mastery of this fragile art form.
